London’s 'Ratha-yatra’ Festival of Chariots

It was a great surprise, exiting Green Park station yesterday and being confronted by a big crowd of people, happily chanting. We had stumbled upon London’s 'Ratha-yatra’ Festival of Chariots.

The tourists on the London Duck, got a bird's eye (!) view of the chariots.

Had we been in the area earlier we would have seen the notices about road closures on Sunday 17th June 2012 allowing revellers to hand-pull three 40-foot high colourful chariots along the streets.

The annual Hare Krishna festival was attended by festival-goers from every continent.

The celebration echoes the one held every year in mid-summer in Puri. It symbolises Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra, going on vacation from his temple to his garden palace in the countryside.
