Seven Cameroon athletes go missing

On Tuesday 7 August 2012 it was reported that Seven Cameroon athletes had ‘gone missing’ during the London 2012 Olympic Games.

First to disappear was Drusille Ngako, a reserve goalkeeper for the women’s football team, followed by swimmer Paul Ekane Edingue. On Sunday the five boxers – Thomas Essomba, Christian Donfack Adjoufack, Abdon Mewoli, Blaise Yepmou Mendouo and Serge Ambomo – also disappeared from the Olympic Village.

“What began as rumour has finally turned out to be true. Seven Cameroonian athletes who participated at the 2012 London Olympic Games have disappeared from the Olympic Village, ” said Cameroon’s head of mission to London 2012, David Ojong.

While it has been suggested that the five boxers, a swimmer and a footballer have “defected” to stay in Europe for economic reasons, officials suggest the group may have gone sightseeing or visited friends.

British immigration rules allow Olympic athletes, and their families, to stay in this country legally until early November. All athletes can “freely leave the Olympic Games village if they wish” said Home Office sources, so they may just be enjoying a bit of sightseeing while they have the chance. After all, none of them have yet applied for asylum in Britain.

History is being made in Women's football at the london 2012 Olympics

Although men's football has been included in every Olympic Games except 1896 and 1932 women's football was not included in the Olympics until the 1996 Atlanta Games.

The USA has made it to the final in all the preveious four Olympic Games, winning the gold medal three times.

Yet again the USA have made it to the final. For London 2012 the USA are facing Japan. This match comes a year after Japan unexpectedly won the World Cup by dramatically beating the United States on penalties.

Womens football has come a long way and gained many supporters. More than 70,000 watched Britain's group match with Brazil at Wembley; at the time a record crowd for a woman's football match anywhere in Britain.Thursday's final is expected to break that and set a new Olympic attendance record playing to a 83,000-capacity crowd.

Womens volleyball

On Monday afternoon, Olympic Womens Volleyball included matches between

Dominican Republic v Russia and

United States v Brazil

The Dominican Republic had lost their first match to Italy and now faced the towering world champions Russia. The Russinas may have had the height but the Dominican Republic team had the speed. It was a lively match which the Russians won 1-3. It was closely fought with sets: 23-25, 15-25, 26-24, 22-25

The next to play were the United States, ranked No. 1 in the world, against Brazil, the world No. 2. Hopes were high for another exciting match. Again the match went to four sets. United States won 3-1, scoring sets: 25-18, 25-17, 22-25, 25-21

The U.S. women never have won Olympic gold. They won silver in 2008 and 1984 and bronze in 1992.

As at 2nd August 2012, Russia head group A having played 3 matches and gained 9 points. They are matched by USA, who head group B, also having played 3 matches and gained 9 points.

London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony

London is the only city to host the Summer Games three times.

And today the eyes of the world are on it as the Opening ceremony is staged. Beijing's opening ceremony had 2008 pounding drummers and cost a reported $100m. People said it would be impossible to beat. So it’s a brave man who takes on the challenge to design the next opening ceremony. Step up Danny Boyle.

The Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle was given a budget of £27m to work with. Smaller than the Beijing 2008 ceremony and smaller even than the Athens 2004 ceremony, which cost around £35m.

"I would have thought the difficulty is how you cram in all that is great about our country," British Prime Minister David Cameron said Thursday. "Whether it is sport, art, literature, history, contribution to world events, there are so many things to celebrate about our country that packing all that in to these hours must be a pretty tough task. But I am confident they have done a good job."

Boyle’s vision is to represent not just London, but Britain.inspired by William Shakespeare's play "The Tempest" the ceremony's theme is "Isles of Wonder." It stretches from idyllic pastures through Industrial Revolution to popular culture. It will feature a cast and crew of 10,000 plus 70 sheep, 12 horses, 10 chickens and nine geese. Exact details of the show are still being kept secret. Those of us lucky enough to attend a rehearsal have been urged to #savethesecret. Considering this is the first social media Olympics, to be able to “save the secret” so well for so long is an achievement in itself!

And will it still be spectacular? Having seen part of it I can say “Yes”. Organisers did not show us the whole show, so I’m looking forward to the bits I don’t know about as well as re-seeing the ones I already loved.

So at 9pm make yourself a cup of tea, or pour the wine, and wave your flag in front of the big screen if you weren’t lucky enough to get tickets to the stadium.  It’s going to be a great show.
